Is it safe to let an AI read my files?¶
Short answer: yes — if you limit what it can touch. The risk isn't "AI reads a file." The risk is giving it access to everything and hoping for the best.
The one habit that does most of the work¶
Give the AI one folder, made for the job, containing copies of only the files the job needs. Not your Documents folder. Not your whole drive.
That's the same least access habit behind every guide on this site. If the AI can only see three files, the worst case is small and boring.
What "reading a file" actually means¶
When an AI reads a file, the text goes into its context — the window of what it can see right now. Two things follow:
- It can quote and use anything in that file. Including the parts you forgot were in there.
- In a chat tool, that text goes to the AI service. Treat it like anything else you'd paste into a website.
Before you share a file, check it¶
- Open the file yourself first. Skim the whole thing.
- No passwords, card numbers, or private keys inside. (Secrets stay out.)
- No other people's private details the job doesn't need.
- It's a copy, not your only original.
- It's in the one folder you made for this job.
Files that need extra care¶
- Spreadsheets. Hidden columns and extra tabs count. The AI reads what you forgot was there.
- Exports from other apps. Email or chat exports often include far more than the messages you meant to share.
- Downloads you didn't make. A file can contain instructions aimed at your AI. Never hand one over unread — this is why every playbook zip on this site shows you its contents first.
What about agents, not just chat?¶
An agent doesn't just read — it can act. Same habit, plus two more rules from Keeping it safe: copies before originals, and approval before anything is sent, changed, or deleted. The first agent walkthrough is built around exactly this setup.
You're done when¶
You can name every file the AI can see — because there are only a few, they're copies, and you put them there on purpose.
